NGOs plan relief efforts

AHMEDABAD: Worried over the violent chain of incidents in Gujarat, more than 70 NG0s from the state, representatives of the business community and Viswa Guiarati Samaj (VGS), a federation of over 30 Gujarati associations abroad, met on Wednesday in Ahmedabad to discuss ways to help in riot relief work.    

"In view of increasing concerns of Gujaratis across the globe, we have begun contributing to the relief work," said Krishnkant Vakharia of VGS. "We have already sent food, clothes and medicines to 32 relief camps;' he said. The second phase will entail a long-term plan of rehabilitation of the victims displaced due to riots. "The third stage will involve working towards bringing secular literacy within cities and interiors of Gujarat," he added.    


Minakshi Thakkar of 'Yojana' said that Gujaratis from the US, UK, Middle East and Pakistan have expressed their concern over the riots and want to participate in riot relief work. She said the meeting has been convened to discuss the ways in which NG0s and business community from Gujarat can join VGS's relief project.    

Lalubhai Desai from Khedbhramha said that about 35,000 riot victims are at present 


staying in relief camps in the city. "There are 1,300 families which have migrated towards Vadali and Himmatnagar. These places do not have any relief camp. We need to reach out to them," he said.  

"Re-building the lost ties between communities is the need of the hour," said Vasuben Bhatt of Gujarat Stri Kelavani Mandal.

and Vikas have been visiting the victims and havebeen contributing to rebuild the lost connections between communities. VGS can work with the women institutes which are present even in the interiors of Gujarat for constructive work," she added. Mallika Sarabhai from Darpana Academy suggested that organisations like Lion's Club, Jyoti Sangh, VGS can adopt these relief camps.
